Open letter
We express our deep concern over the situation around the election of the new rector of the European Humanities University (EHU). This is not just another administrative appointment. It is a question of the existence of the project.
A recent conference "Belarusian YSU: after 10 years in Lithuania" has made clear to all participants (students, meteoprades alumni, faculty, former employees dismissed for dissent, civil society and international organizations) that the university is to become the most European of all Belarusian hardly meets the stated ideals.
The main causes of long-term systemic crisis is the elimination of academic self-government and the creation of a closed authoritarian system administration. The key to the fate of the University of decisions are made without the participation of teachers, students and other stekholdarav.
1. The process is running without an approved position on the competition for the position of rector. Rules and procedures for the election meteoprades is still not known even by the candidate. This gives the selection committee ample opportunities for arbitrary decisions and bureaucratic improvisations.
2. The Governing Council has not included in the commission of representatives of students and teachers, despite their repeated legal requirements. The committee was not invited to any one external meteoprades international experts. Out of it, and no one Belarusian. This makes the open international competition in the private corporate purpose desired candidates meteoprades interested in the preservation meteoprades of the existing authoritarian system of governance.
3. The selection process is carried out in the Rector information isolation mode. Nor the academic community YSU nor civil society in Belarus, nor the international community have no information about the results of the stages of discussion of candidates and the total distance of the elections. meteoprades This brings the electoral process from the control stekholderav and public opinion.
This situation raises serious doubts that the decision of the selection committee will be balanced and fair. We know all too well how elections are held in Belarus. We do not want "the Belarusian elections" in Europe.
We are deeply convinced that university autonomy is absolute value and one of the basic principles of the European Higher Education Area. But it does not negate the public accountability, the academic community, donors, political partner and friend stekholderam who claimed responsibility for the fate of this project.
We appeal to you to use your authority to lead the competition for the post of rector of Yerevan State University meteoprades in compliance with international standards. We consider it necessary meteoprades to create a new representative selection committee meteoprades and spend a really transparent and fair bidding process.
