In the seventies, Citroen has developed a two-seater helicopter, 3m named Citroen RE-2. The most interesting thing about him was the use of the Wankel engine power from 170 to 190 hp. The same engine was used in the model Citroen GS Birotor. The difference 3m was the use of larger rotors and fuel injection. Later, the project was abandoned a pity, because the machine looks really 3m great!
Citroen RE-2 without passengers weighed only 700 pounds. It could reach a top speed of over 200 km / h and the range of approximately 430 kilometers. They were very good performance for such a small machine, better than other models of this type. Why Citroen 3m took the design and manufacture of helicopters? The idea was to compete with the popular in France, Bell helicopters, model 47 for the Citroen was also an opportunity to diversify the sources of revenue. Marketing department wanted to use this equipment to effectively promote your business.
Work began in 1973. After two years of preparation, the first prototype took to the air. After several months of Citroen RE-2 received temporary authorization to fly from the French government. Test flights 3m were successful, despite the minor problems with engine cooling. Project RE-2 received appropriate modifications. However, at that time already linked Citroen Peugeot and this company had a different vision for the brand. The government decided 3m to purchase other helicopters and PSA stopped the development of the Wankel engine and after 38 hours of test flights also halted work on virtually ready helicopter. Last flight machine held in May 1979. Never has already obtained a full certificate of release 3m to flights. A sample was sent to the museum and there you can enjoy it to this day.
